This weeks visit to Weerasakreck gym looked like this, with all rounds 3 minutes.
- 3 rounds of rope
- 2 rounds shadow kickboxing
- 1 round sandbag
- into the ring for 5 rounds of thaipads
- 8 rounds of heavybag
- strength and & conditioning; core work, pushups/hindu pushups in the same set as 35kg arm-curls (EZ bar)
- 1 round of shadow
Of course there was some stretching in there but I’d rather have used a foam roller.
Also, the lack of heavyweights, or even light heavyweights there (one arrived as I was leaving) makes sparring impossible.
I arrived at the dojo in the middle of the summer of 2001, the hottest summer on record in Japan for 80 years they said. Coming from Scotland, my hottest ever holiday taken in the Mediterranean, the heat coupled with high humidity was ferocious. No air-conditioning, the gym in set at basement level with little circulation of air. Since it was the day after Pride 15,
It was 2001 when I first came to Japan and decided I wanted to try competitive MMA with a view to turning professional. My initial interest was a combination of a natural competitiveness coupled with the urge to see if the martial arts I’d begun practicing in Scotland at Rick Young’s Black Belt Academy would work. I was told that if I didn’t have previous fight experience abroad then I would have to win an amateur tournament in order to be considered for a professional bout.
